ABOUT THE artist & company

Halley Willcox [BFA, MFA] is a dance artist, educator, questioner, and the director of Methods of Madness Dance Theater (MMDT). Under her leadership, MMDT tours original evening-length works, develops community programming and workshops.

Methods of Madness Dance Theater is an outlet for Halley’s creative work which ranges from experimental minimalism with a sense of adventure to placemaking rooted in community building through movement exploration. She is inspired by curiosity, legacy, preservation, memory, nature and binoculars. Halley is motivated by her question: How do we communicate our imagination? She uses her independent creative projects to articulate this question, make the world a better place and have a little fun.

Halley is also the founder and director of the AZ Dance Film Fest and serves on the dance faculty at both Grand Canyon University and Arizona State University. At ASU, she co-teaches and collaborates with Liz Lerman on the development of the Atlas of Creative Tools, a multidisciplinary creativity framework.

Since 2019, Halley has been a Permanent Artist-in-Residence at [nueBOX], supporting artists across disciplines. Her creative work has been shaped by residencies such as the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, Keshet Arts, Tempe Arts and Culture, Sojourn Theater, Aeris Körper, Charlotte Street and Synthesis ASU.

Her work has been presented throughout the Southwest and Midwest, as well as in New York, Canada, Mexico, and Spain.
